Lateral Moves
BETH LIVENSPERGER
OCTOBER 16 - NOVEMBER 7
press release
AlterWork Studios is excited to present Lateral Moves, a solo exhibition of mixed media works by Beth Livensperger, on view from October 16 – November 7, 2020. This installation, tailored to the gallery space, centers on charged moments set in the suffocating banality of the office. Waiting, stasis, and rejection thread through these interrelated images. Frosted glass doors hide the decision-makers, and bad news is handed out all- round. Livensperger’s pieces respond in part to the economic distress brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, and in part to long- standing issues present for women in white-collar jobs. Flattened forms, subtly-broken perspective, and anachronistic black and white heighten a sense of anxious malaise. This exhibition casts a wary glance at our ongoing condition of extreme uncertainty, during which ideas and institutions previously thought solid have seemed to dissolve.
Beth Livensperger holds a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union in NYC, and an M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. She has exhibited at venues in NYC, widely throughout the U.S., and in Seoul, Korea. Her solo projects have been hosted by The Abrons Art Center and Chashama, and she has participated in group exhibitions at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, RISD Memorial Hall Gallery, The Painting Center, and William Holman Gallery among many others. Her work has been discussed by ArtCritical’s Review Panel, and reviewed in Politico, Two Coats of Paint blog, and WNYC’s Culture Datebook. Residency and grant support has been received by the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Chashama, The Abrons Art Center, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts among others. Livensperger is currently a Keyholder artist at the Lower East Side Printshop.
This exhibition is made possible by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. The artist also gratefully acknowledges the support of the Lower East Side Printshop for production of work in this exhibition.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, gallery is open by appointment only. Contact tina@alterworkstudios.com for details.
