Solitary

COLLEEN PESCI

OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 14
press release

“Solitary” is a work in progress that explores loneliness. More specifically the loneliness that is present even when not physically alone. When mandated quarantine began in March, I watched as many of us were forced to face the isolation we had already created for ourselves. An isolation constructed through false digital connectedness. An isolation constructed by setting unwavering boundaries in our intimate relationships to preserve the guise of independence and self-care. When the moment came where we were required, by external forces, to be physically alone it seemed, tragically, this wasn’t new territory.

The material for these collages were gathered during quarantine while on slow walks and long afternoons paging through books and magazines lying about. With the inclusion of glass, plastic, and layering, “Solitary” beckons viewers to see their own reflection in the work, to comb through the layers, and to experience a communal and unifying release. A release from one’s own solitude. An invitation back out into the world.

All of the work below was made in 2020 using found objects that include: glass, images, pressed flowers and plastic. The pieces were all assembled on the scanner then digitally scanned.
